SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETING
In a nutshell, in simultaneous interpreting the interpreter conveys the message of the speaker in a different language as he/she speaks. But there are different ways of doing so:
From a booth, normally located at the back of the room or, in some international organisations and conference centres, one floor above the room providing a good view of the speaker and the audience. It is extremely important that interpreters are able to see the speaker. Our job is to put across his message, his ideas, his enthusiasm or disappointment. To do that accurately, we rely on body language as much as on words.
Remotely, from a booth in a different room (or a different location) where we can follow the conference/meeting from a monitor.
Whispering, if there are under 10 people who need interpretation. No, we do not whisper in the ears of those who do not understand (although sometimes we do!). To ensure that we provide the best possible quality and that our clients can hear us, we use the tour-guide system.
Instant communication
Big metings, international conferences, marketing focus groups
Two interpreters work as a team (why?)
Research shows that, given the high levels of concentration required to interpret, an average of 30 minutes is the maximum time an interpreter can deliver a satisfactory interpretation. After that time, the quality of the interpretation deteriorates due to fatigue. Therefore, as an industry standard we work in pairs supporting each other.
CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETING
In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter takes notes while the speaker takes the floor, and renders the message in a different language afterwards.
